The schematic image shown here is highly educational to a layperson like me. The expert article from which it is taken is aimed at professionals and contains several highly technical graphs describing the observations made by a new technique in hunting planets outside our solar system.
The image is copied from an article describing the discovery of a rocky planet in the habitable zone around HD 40307 located some 42 ly from Sun. Mikko Tuomi, Guillem Anglada-Escude and colleagues suggest that the superearth might have liquid water.
